Kids love hot dogs wrapped in pastry. Parents love their kids to eat vegetables. Now both can be happy with these incredible Carrot “Dog” Rollups. Carrots are cut and peeled to resemble hot dogs, then simmered in a savory, sweet and smokey sauce that makes them look, smell and taste like real hot dogs. Wrap some cheese and crescent roll dough around them and bake until golden. Kids will love them and now so can mom and dad. For an easy appetizer, substitute the longer carrots with packaged baby carrots and wrap them with puff pastry strips.
4 med. carrots, cut in half, peeled to look like hot dogs
1 pkg. refrigerated crescent roll dough or puff pastry
In a small bowl combine soy sauce and next 4 ingredients.
Add liquid to a medium skillet. Add carrot dogs, then turn heat to medium-low. Simmer carrots for 10-15 minutes or until crisp tender, turning carrots every few minutes to prevent burning. Remove carrots from pan with a pair of tongs and set aside to cool for 10 minutes.
WRAPPING CARROT DOGS:
Unroll crescent dough and cut into 1/2-inch strips. Place 1 strip on a flat surface. Place a slice of Sargento Ultra Thin Mild Cheddar Cheese slightly overlapping the crescent roll triangle. Place 1 cooked carrot dog on the edge of cheddar cheese slice. Roll up cheese over carrot, then roll crescent triangle over cheese. Place seam side down on a lined cookie sheet. Repeat with remaining carrot dogs.
Bake in a 375 degree oven for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown. Serve
