This chowder packs a lot of savory flavor into its creamy texture with a combination of applewood smoked bacon, cayenne pepper and Sargento® Shredded 4 State Cheddar® Cheese just to name a few. The tanginess of the cheese pairs perfectly with the smooth buttery richness in every spoonful.

  • 3 thick pieces applewood smoked bacon, chopped
  • 1 cup minced onion
  • 3 Tbsp. flour
  • 1/4 tsp. cayenne pepper
  • 1-1/2 cups whole milk or half-and-half
  • 1-1/2 cups chicken broth
  • 2 cups (8 oz.) Sargento® Shredded 4 State Cheddar® Cheese, divided
  1. Cook bacon in large saucepan over medium heat until crisp. Use a slotted spoon to transfer bacon to paper towel-lined plate; set aside. Pour off all but 2 tablespoons drippings from saucepan.
  2. Cook onion in drippings, stirring occasionally, until tender, 4 to 5 minutes. Add flour and cayenne pepper; cook and stir 1 minute. Stir in milk and broth. Bring to boil over high heat, stirring occasionally. Reduce heat; simmer 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat; stir in 1-1/2 cups cheese until melted.
  3. Ladle into bowls; top with reserved bacon and remaining cheese.
