This isn’t your regular old grilled cheese; our recipe for a crispy Monte Cristo involves some deliciously savory flavors from Sargento® Sliced Aged Swiss Cheese and robust deli slices of your favorite ham between sourdough bread. It’s dipped into an egg mixture and cooked until golden and crisp on a skillet. Yum!

  • 4 eggs, beaten
  • 1 cup nonfat milk
  • 4 tsp. Sargento® Grated Parmesan Cheese
  • 1/4 tsp. pepper
  • 4 slices (1 oz. each) ham
  • 4 slices Sargento® Sliced Aged Swiss Cheese
  • 8 slices sourdough or French bread, 1/2-inch thick
  • 4 tsp. margarine
  1. Combine eggs, milk, Parmesan cheese and pepper in medium bowl; set aside.
  2. Top 4 bread slices with slice of Swiss cheese and slice of ham; top with remaining four bread slices.
  3. Heat margarine in small nonstick skillet until bubbly. Dip each sandwich into egg mixture, turning several times to absorb as much liquid as possible. Place in skillet, pouring a bit of remaining egg mixture over top of bread. Cook over medium-low heat 3 minutes per side or until golden brown and crisp.
