Italian Style Meatloaf

Ingredients

  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 Tbsp. olive oil
  • 1 lb. lean ground beef or turkey
  • 1/2 lb. bulk Italian sausage
  • 3/4 cup pasta sauce, divided
  • 1/2 cup fresh bread crumbs
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1/4 tsp. dried basil
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1/4 tsp. pepper
  • 8 slices Sargento® Deli Style Sliced Mozzarella Cheese, divided

Directions

  1. Cook onion and garlic in oil in small skillet 6 minutes or until tender. Remove from heat and let stand 5 minutes to cool.
  2. Combine meat, sausage, 1/4 cup pasta sauce, bread crumbs, egg, basil, salt and pepper in large bowl. Add onion mixture; mix well. Line an 11x9-inch baking pan or broiler pan with foil. Shape half of meat mixture into 10x5-inch loaf. Top with 4 slices of cheese and remaining meat mixture. Spread remaining pasta sauce over top of loaf. Bake in preheated 350°F oven 40 minutes.
  3. Cut 4 slices of cheese into 1-inch wide strips. Remove meatloaf from oven. Arrange cheese strips decoratively in criss-cross pattern over loaf. Return to oven; bake 5 minutes or until cheese melts and internal temperature of loaf reaches 160°F. Let stand 5 minutes before serving.
