Sargento is built on three generations of tradition, expertise and passion for bringing you the best cheese in the world. Explore some of the proudest moments in our family's history below.
The Story Begins
It all started with Leonard Gentine, a young man from Wisconsin with a passion for cheese—and the commitment to bring that passion to life. Leonard began his journey in a small carriage house in Plymouth, Wisconsin, where he opened the Plymouth Cheese Counter. This modest delicatessen set Leonard on a path to success within the cheese industry.
An Industry Leader is Born
Leonard Gentine and business partner Joseph Sartori establish Sargento Cheese Company. The company is derived from the last names of these two founders. Their initial product line includes family-sized packages of Mozzarella, Provolone, and Romano cheeses.
A Family Company
After ten successful years together, Leonard purchased his partner's stock, making Sargento a wholly owned family company, which it remains today.
Inheriting a Passion for Cheese
After more than 30 years as founder and Chief Executive, Leonard Gentine retires. His son Lou carries on his father's passion, dedication, and standards of excellence that are at the core of Sargento.
People, Pride, & Progress
To continue Leonard Gentine's legacy, a team of family members and Sargento employees created a list of 20 principles to reflect the founder's values and ensure that they would continue to shape the company's future. The result was "People, Pride, & Progress," a guide focused on nurturing the workplace community. Sargento believes that treating employees with trust, honesty and respect will bring enthusiasm and loyalty to what they call the Sargento corporate culture.
Today, Sargento is a respected leader in the cheese world. Louie Gentine, grandson of Leonard and son of Lou, is continuing the family commitment to bringing you the highest quality cheese. Working closely with his father, Louie carries on the Sargento values, traditions and love for authentic cheese.
